If you browse our toilet seat catalogue you will come across various technical data sheets for toilet seats. These indicate the measurements of the toilet seat and the characteristics of the hinges needed to check whether the toilet seat you are buying is the correct one (we would however remind you that if you have any doubts or are unsure of the model you need to use the identification service developed by the Sintesibagno team, clik here about how it works), and are: the length of the holes, the width, the fixing centre distance of the toilet seat and whether it requires a mounting from below or above.

You will notice (see image opposite) that many toilet seats in size P (length from the holes to the end of the bowl) have a size range indicated, e.g. 41.5/46.5, and the same thing in size I (distance between the fixing holes of the toilet seat) e.g. 13/23. Talking to many customers every day, we have realised that it is sometimes unclear how it is possible for the product to have different sizes. The typical observation is: how does the wooden or plastic part of the toilet seat extend? How does the centre distance of the toilet seat vary? When ordering, do I have to tell you the measurements I need and do you make it to measure? All legitimate questions and doubts for someone who rightly does not fit toilet seats every day like a professional plumber! In reality, it’s all about the metal hinges that are part of the toilet seat equipment, which can either already be fitted to the toilet seat (usually for those made of coated wood) or supplied in a separate bag (always for those made of thermoset).

It is the discs, with the pin where the toilet seat is to be anchored and their guides, that allow the toilet seat to achieve the correct length (shorter or longer than the holes on the toilet bowl). Depending on whether you position them forwards or backwards you will get the different sizes indicated in the data sheet.

The same is true for the different toilet seat centre distances indicated in the data sheet. The movement, in this case either to the right or to the left, will allow the pin to move until the fixing screws are positioned in correspondence with the holes on the toilet bowl.

To explain this topic even better, let us take a toilet seat cover, the dedicated Zero light from the Sintesibagno catalogue. We are faced with a very surprising situation: the plastic part of the toilet seat is longer than the available space on the toilet bowl. How is this possible? All of the above applies: with hinges you can ‘lengthen‘ the toilet seat, but you can also do the opposite, i.e. ‘shorten‘ it.

As we show in the picture above, the toilet seat is a full 45 cm long, the space on the toilet seat is only 40.5 cm. Thanks to the teardrop hinges provided, the toilet seat cover has that reduced length and the necessary centre distance for correct installation (19 cm).
