Ceramica Duravit. Choosing design to conquer the market. WC seats for sanitary ware made in Germany

Ceramica Duravit. Choosing design to conquer the market. WC seats for sanitary ware made in Germany. (part 1)

  Postato da:
Today we are talking about a German company that has conquered the bathroom market worldwide. A company that recently celebrated its 200th anniversary. From the website Duravit take a few passages: “In 2017, Duravit is celebrating its 200th anniversary. 200 years in which we have made quality, design and technology our core competencies. At the same time, we became manufacturers of designer bathrooms and can now furnish the whole bathroom thanks to our complete range. Find out how we got here and what the milestones in our history were. It all began in 1817, when Georg Friedrich Horn founded a pottery factory in Hornberg, in the Black Forest, which later focused on the production of tableware. The expansion of production to include ceramic sanitary ware was the basis for future success. From 1950, production was switched from earthenware to porcelain, and in 1960 a new name was introduced to the world of sanitary ware: Duravit.Today, Duravit AG is an internationally operating group with 11 production facilities in Germany, Egypt, China, France, India, Tunisia and Turkey and over 5700 employees worldwide.

The stylistic breakthrough with their sanitary ware began in the 1980s, here again a passage from the Duravit: ”With the 80s, the theme of design, as we understand it today, entered the bathroom for the first time and this was also the beginning of our success story. Then as now, we had a decisive influence on this process. The first projects with Dieter Sieger set standards and retrospectively changed the entire industry. But our products are more than that. They are timelessly modern, even today. In 1994 the big breakthrough came with Philippe Starck. Presentation, approach and product design were something completely new at that time. The result was modern classics and the DNA of Duravit.”

D-code series by DuravitSerie D-code Duravit

To talk about designer sanitary ware, let’s start with their simplest sanitary ware, but one that has given them a brand recognition they would not otherwise have achieved. The D-code series is typically a mass-market series intended for large numbers of customers, and was deliberately kept at very low list prices so as to enable the brand to compete with cheaper series from outside the EU. Duravit’s commercial policy has worked. Many contractors are happy to include a Duravit product in their specifications and show it to their potential customers without having to spend the large sums of money that other Duravit ranges have. In the last 10 to 15 years we have seen a significant increase in the number of Duravit products and brands in bathrooms in Italian homes. D-code in its formal simplicity (certainly a rectangular shape) is pleasing and gives a good idea of a modern and up-to-date sanitaryware. Its toilet seats in the three versions available: Originale in thermosetting, Dedicato in thermosetting and wood covered in white polyester you can find them in the store Sintesibagno at the following link [ clik HERE ]

1930 series by DuravitSerie 1930 Duravit

1930 represents the classic style variant Made in Germany by Duravit. We talked about it in the post: ”Sanitaryware and toilet seat covers in octagonal and hexagonal shapes”, where we saw its Made in Italy competitors: Decò by Cesame, Classic by Absolute Ideal Standard, Canova Mono and Royal by Globo. Strongly inspired by the shape of the Cesame sanitaryware, it changes in part in the gradations of the angles and in the dimensions of the upper part. The octagonal toilet seat cover for these sanitaryware is also available in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ]

HAPPY-D series by Duravit

This successful sanitary ware takes its name from its D shape. When viewed from above, all elements of the series (including the washbasins) are shaped like the fourth letter of the alphabet. A pure and minimalist shape enhanced on the toilet bowl and bidet by a ceramic band in the upper part that lightens the line. Its toilet seat falls into the category seen in the post: ”Sanitary fixtures and their covers with (non-standard) non-standard centre distance (part 2)” because it has a centre distance of 21 cm. The toilet seats in all variations are available in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ]

DURAPLUS series by Duravit

A 90s Duravit series now out of production. It was the German competitor of Ala by Ideal Standard which we saw in the post: ”Wall-hung sanitary ware and their covers (part 1)”. Even back then, however, it had an extra edge in terms of style and shape (except perhaps for the fact that you could see the fastenings, which is no longer the case), so much so that its shape can still be found today in many of our competitors’ more modern sanitary ware. All Duraplus series WC seats can be found in the store at the following link [ clik HERE ]

VERO series by Duravit

Vero is the rectangular shape according to Duravit. We have seen many rectangular sanitary ware and their covers in the post: ”Sanitaryware rectangular shapes. Why do all toilet seat covers for this toilet look the same?” where we have seen the interpretation of this geometric shape by many ceramic companies. Among all the ceramic series we saw, we also found its two direct competitors: FROZEN by Ceramica Simas and VERSO by Ceramica Catalano. You can find the original Duravit Vero toilet seat cover in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ]
We have started to see some of Duravit’s ceramic production and their toilet seats.
